"How long does it take you to do a painting?"
This is a question I'm asked most often and by almost everyone! I'm tempted to say 20 years...for I've spent all that time devoted to Art and it's taken me that long to reach where I'm at...miles to go yet!
Part of me wants to show off and say that it takes only a few hours...yet some take days and weeks!
The truth is that each painting follows its own individual time frame which is almost beyond my control. I feel I am but an instrument and that the image taking shape through my hands will decide when and how long it will take to emerge as complete!
Sometimes a painting can take ages - in terms of conception, background study and meticulous planning. I work in layers and often have to leave a work aside for one layer to dry, sometimes even for weeks while I start another work in the meantime. It's not a simple process yet some paintings somehow just 'happen' spontaneously, simply and quickly...almost effortlessly!
Each painting is for me a new journey to be explored...exciting and at times frustrating yet delighting ...the important part being knowing when to stop!
